Program Notes:
This elegant text, traditionally attributed to St. Ambrose of Milan, has been sung for centuries as a hymn during the Compline of the Roman Breviary. It is a prayer for blessing and sanctuary through the evening=s rest. Upon my first reading I was immediately struck by the color and imagination inherent in the language, particularly in the second stanza – where the deep calm of the previous verse is replaced by foreboding images of the shades of night. A beautiful symmetry is achieved by the addition of the eloquent Gloria Patri that brings the hymn to a close. Through the patient and fluid unfolding of the Latin St. Ambrose has imbued this hymn with a sense of comfort and warmth, offering hope for a light to illumine the dark hours to come.
Text Translation:
To you before the day’s end,
we pray, Creator of all things,
that, by your clemency,
you might be our guard and keeper.
Put nightmares far from us,
And night terrors.
And restrain our enemies,
That our bodies not know pollution.
Grant this, Father most merciful,
Through the only one equal to the Father,
With the Spirit Paraclete,
Reigning through all ages. Amen.
